foalstory: (Ally & Denali)
You know? I never posted ALL the photos Steph took of me. Or rather the five I bought and put into one long frame.

And the other four.... )
foalstory: (Ally - goodbyes)
Denali's been great lately -- she has, however, lost weight over the last two weeks. HOW, I've no clue unless that 10 degree drop was really THAT important to her. I'm not sure? There's plenty of horses unblanketed at the barn -- she had hers off when we were pushing 50 F, but she's also not clipped yet. I came back from Thanksgiving to find her ... ribby.

geh! I spend all summer trying to get her to LOSE weight, and then she manages to do so within a period of a week+. I upped her feed, but suddenly it seems like her coat isn't thick enough. Weird. But really this is the problem:

Two years ago, this is what I was seeing on Ally. I've been thinking more and more about him as the darkness of solstice approaches. The grief? is of the sort that turns me into a babbling idiot at times. It's easy to talk ABOUT him, but to remember ... to feel? that still hurts like a b*tch.

That there's even an echo of that when I see Denali underweight (and looking SO much more like Ally right now with her fitness and muscling looking incredible), that I can't help but *feel*. and it sucks.

so no, I've no idea when I'm clipping my mare. geh.

oh cool!

Anyone know who Beth Bergeron is? not sure which gift list exchange this is from, but the dragonfly dressage pad is *awesome* :) :) :)

Deli etc

foalstory: (Denali trots out)
lovely enough, my thanksgiving break involved time with at least one horse - Deli, owned by Marie/[livejournal.com profile] lurath. Incidently, I'd ridden her exactly 1 year previously and found a green but capable mare who just needed a reaaaaaally steady rider (and a better saddle).

In that year's time, Marie's gotten both of those (I think the bareback riding helped a lot!), cause even i couldn't find a decent balance at the canter this year, since it was SO much stronger and ground covering. Last year it was a rocking horse lope and easy as pie. Opps! More capable horses aren't always easier to ride.

But we had MUCH fun, including little-red-hair-mare moments (on Deli's part, not as much on mine ;) ) and ended up schooling parts of 1st level 1 test just for the heck of it.

It's very cool to find that degree of change (ok ok so it WAS a full YEAR) over time and to still give a few tips (plus give Deli heartattacks with trot shoulder ins) and really push to see what she could do now (vs. 1 year ago).

yay! brings smile to face :D

I posted this as a comment, but figured I'd repost it here because it's worthy.

(question was about whether you and your horse never clicked)

yup! and went on loving the horse to pieces although I knew he'd never be 'my' type of horse (unless I wanted a bum around fun hack).

A new horse came into the barn, vicious in his stall, trying to bite anyone who came by. Trainer asked me to try him out (he was privately owned but needed riding). Being the teenager I was, I did and WOW it was a disastrous ride, the sort where you use the fence to stop at times and never trot in a straight line. I ended the ride and declared 'Someone needs to work with this horse!!'

Trainer called me that night and offered me a lease on him. WHAT? totally NO emotional bond to him, frustrated and annoyed by him at times to say the least. So I said yes of course, cause I needed a ride :)

A year later he was going magnificently, taught me SO much about how to LISTEN to a horse, not just order it around, and while he maxed out at 2'3" at jumping (fat little quarterhorse, he literally could NOT go higher), we had a blast and I was so so sad when he owner moved him to another barn before I graduated high school.

So I knew I never 'clicked' with him until MUCH later, but even then I knew he would never be the 'horse for me' but he was the right stage at the right point in my life.

(and I also got a kick ass college entrance essay out of him and all he taught me about listening :) )

Wings!
started as an off the track (QH racing) western trained, to jumping and trail riding galloping pony to a dressage mount for his owner. All around much? :)
