Accidentally landed in it huh? And how did that happen? He's done a few weddings, and a few horsey events here and there, mostly stuff for friends. He is going to get the chance to do the photographs for a book on equine law this spring. Just curious as to what your format is, and how you make it work. How much you charge and then how you return photographs. Curious about all of it pretty much, Lol! If you want to get this off your LJ, feel free to email me at hqueen13 at gmail dot com.
my trainer started up a show series and I asked her if anyone was taking photos.
the rest grew rather exponentially from there :) it helps that I'm in a small area with limited photographers and only a few that seem to 'get' horse show photography and can do it semi well. you can check out the show photos I've done (and see how I improved too!) in the 'galleries' and 'ATE shows' at www.catspawphotos.com
it's hosted/whatever'd throug SmugMug as a pro account, which means I have a basket set up for prints, downloads, etc for folks to use. his best bet is to start low on the totem poll and get experience -- I know there's a local dressage show series (that I couldn't shoot timewise this last year and I only hope it's happening again next year!) that has no photographer that I hope to pick up, more for the eexperience than expecting folks to pay for schooling show photos.
course, with economy going down, more folks will do schooling shows than rater shows -- or so the thinking goes. So who knows? might be the best place to be :D
Hmm, I hadn't thought about SmugMug. that is something that we'll have to look into for sure. I've seen the site before, it looked a bit different than the usual place. We live on the grounds of an equestrian center, and we've talked about doing photos of clinics, as well as videoing clinics, too. We just haven't managed to get anything started. I know one of the shows we were at there was a woman advertising the photos and they looked down right HIDEOUS. Especially her "photo shopped" "fancy" pictures. She tried to take an image of a running horse and put it onto a mountain background. A kid cutting photos out of a magazine and making a collage could have done a better job. He keeps saying "I can do this" and I say, yes you can! so get to it! LOL. Thanks for the link, I'll have to send him in that direction and see if we can figure out some ways to handle this. We do host a show every year, so I'll have to see if we can figure out a way to make it happen fro that. Thanks for the suggestions!
SM is great and I've had nothing but success with them. Mostly, I didn't want to be burdened down with print orders and mailing them out, etc etc. Also, I know their customer service is top notch and any issues *will* get resolved, so that's one of those things I'm happy to stick around for :)
Oh goodness, I should post some of the so called 'professional' photos that this one company does for the bigger events. they do all sorts of photography but do NOT "get" horses. like, 5 shots of my butt over a fence when they could have situated themselves ELSEWHERE on the course and gotten so many nicer ones. I wonder if they are puzzled why they get so few orders? sigh.
It's surprisingly easy to "get started". The best is to get some business cards, set up a site, and just let folks know. At the last show of the season that I shot, I was approached by the barn manager and recruited to shoot their clinics and shows (from schooling to rated!) for all of 2009.
Hmm, very good to know about SmugMug, I think I'll have to pass that along and explore it. How much does the professional classification cost?
Yes, this "professional" woman clearly didn't have a clue. I think she was a horse person, she just clearly had no idea about how to opperate a camera. Proves that anybody can make a buck!!
There is another girl that comes to some of our clinics that offers photography, she basically charges 80.00 an hour or so, and then does a complete camera DUMP onto a stick drive and hands you the photos. The photos are aweful, with toes or ear (or helmets) missing, power lines right through the middle of the image, horses in odd positions that just don't look right, "fancy" eye shots that look like crap. She does not understand composition or balance in a photo, and what does it matter, I don't know if she even LOOKS at them before handing them over... To me thats aweful. But then I have more pride in my work than that!
Ahh, dillusioned people, what fun!! Thanks for the suggestions!
I can't recall the price for a pro account at SM off the top of my head, but I know their website will tell ya. I'd check it, but am at work and it's blocked. :PPP
you should get your husband to check out dgrin, their forums. dgrin.com - there's really good topics in the 'Mind Your Business' one about pricing and running your photography as a business, etc etc.
the snap and dump photographer you mentioned is actually talked about in a wedding topic, as apparently those types are popular (cause cheaper) but provide such an inferior product :S there's some folks who LIKE to see everything, good or bad, but bad photos are just ... geh. I post almost all the photos I take, but that's also because after 1000+ in a day, I simply haven't the time to edit out the bad moments. I should, I know, and I would if this were my full time job, but it's not. It's a side business for now.
any how, I'm 'catspaw' in dgrin although I don't post too much you'll see some topics I've started or what not. (and anyone can read/join the forums, SM customers or not!)
Irish-Welsh-Lithuanian would be me :D although when I was in Scotland I had several Scots tell me I was Scottish and, well, I was afraid to tell them otherwise. I guess I'm rather 'Isles' looking, whatever that might be.

I'm up to three pairs of 'real' cowboy boots, plus one citified pair. opps? :D
the newest pair (which I think I'm wearing here??) had these 'sporty' type of soles rather than the 'flat' ones most boots have, so I HAD to get them.
of course.
